The Masonic Lodge - Then & Now

The original Masonic Lodge (No. 100 Taringatura) was established in 1886. It was a very prominent meeting and became popular due to its location being only an hour from everywhere (rumour has it that men would travel on horseback for two days to attend a meeting). Lumsden up until 1979 also had a very busy train station where travel was a little easier. Overnighters up form Invercargill was not unheard of! As one of the largest member 'Lodges' in the South, the original building was built in 1907 and encapsulated the main lodge and front meeting room.

In the 1920's due to popularity the Banquet Hall was added (which is now the accomodation) - The ladies were allowed in this space (Masonic Lodges - some even today are strictly men only). The Banquet Hall and kitchen were used after meetings to gather and eat with the families of the Members. In over 117 years of life the Banquet Hall has hosted Banquets, Balls, Dances, Weddings, Funerals, Private Functions, an Antiques Dealer and remained as an active Lodge until c. 2005.

If only the walls could talk!

Since 2010 this incredible building has been our home and workspace and now private accomodation.

A massive 506m2 of building, the Lodge accomodation encompasses the Banquet Hall and Front Foyer. The Foyer was added as a seperate entrance at the time and was a stunning cloakroom covered in cast hooks to hang fur coats and cloaks.

In 2015 this cloakroom space became Kellys' Coffee Roastery (ROAR Coffee). After hundreds of kilos of coffee roasted in house, we outgrew this space in 2021 and moved the business to the main street in Lumsden with a small cafe (Roasted x Toasted) and in 2024 successfully sold the businesses to a lovely local family. Restoring this space back to its former glory as a cloakroom, original hooks included - to dry wet fishing gear, park your bicycle and hand up your coats and worries.

The Masonic Entrance is now home to Steves Tattoo Studio - Temple Tattoo (Est. 2010). Full of life and colour, as it was in the early 1900's.

We are really excited to share some of the history and space with you!
